More Fun Facts About the Presidents

  1. Theodore Roosevelt wore a lock of Abraham Lincoln’s hair during his inauguration. He had a ring with the hair in it.
  2. After the death of his son, Willie, Abraham Lincoln and his wife Mary engaged in several séances at the white house to try to interact with their deceased son.
  3. George Washington was the owner of a very profitable whiskey distillery.
  4. Gerald Ford was a fashion model when he was younger. He even made an appearance on the cover of Cosmopolitan.
  5. President John Tyler had 15 children. He had eight kids with his first wife and another seven when he remarried.
  6. James K. Polk was the first president to retire after the first term.
  7. Rutherford B. Hayes was the first president to have the Easter Egg roll on the White House lawn. And it’s been a tradition ever since.
  8. Herbert Hoover refused to accept a salary for his presidency. Instead, he donated it all to charities.
  9. Thomas Jefferson invented the swivel chair.
  10. Martin Van Buren had many nicknames, but the longest lasting one was “Old Kinderhook”. This referenced the town he was born in, Kinderhook. During his campaign, supporters held up signs that were marked OK. This was when the phrase first became popular and began to evolve into what it is today.
