  1. Labor Day falls on September 5th this year (2022).
  2. Labor Day is one of the busiest travel days of the year.
  3. The National Hot Dog & Sausage Council (yes, that’s a real thing), says 7 billion hot dogs are eaten from Memorial Day to Labor Day. That’s only three months!
  4. You may have heard the saying “You can’t wear white after Labor Day”, and not known why. The origins of this saying comes from the 1800s. Back then, wearing lighter colors was a way to distinguish the different social classes. Wealthy people often wore lighter clothing all year round. Members of the working class wouldn’t wear white clothes after this holiday because they didn’t want to get their clothes dirty.
  5. Labor Day was started in 1882 by a parade of workers in New York City. The New York Labor Central Council still puts this parade on each year, and is held just north of the original march location.
  6. However, the parade in New York and New York labor union was proposed by Peter McGuire, who spoke at a Canadian labor festival in 1882. Canada had worker parades and wanted labor unions starting in 1872.
  7. The holiday is celebrated on a Monday each year so workers can enjoy a three-day weekend.
  8. Oregon was the first state to declare Labor Day a holiday in 1887, when it was first introduced as a state-by-state basis. It became a federal holiday in 1894.
  9. Labor Day is the third most popular day for grilling in the U.S.
  10. Labor Day was originally supposed to be on May 1st.
  11. As of 2017, the US Census Bureau reports 160 million people are honored each Labor Day.
