Brief History of Willingboro NJ 08046

Willingboro was originally named after the community in England, Wellingborough. Thomas Olive named the area after his hometown, he led settlers into the area that would later become Willingboro Township. Not too long after New Jersey became a state, "Willingborough Township" was incorporated and became one of 104 townships. This makes Willingboro one of the oldest townships in New Jersey.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Willingboro was selected as a location for residential development by the company Levitt & Sons. This project was the company's third and largest development. Levitt acquired most of the land in township, Rancocas, the southeast section was annexed as Westampton Township so the area wouldn't be demolished; Levitt wanted to keep the construction within only one municipality. These first homes were sold in June of 1958.

During this time, the area was known as Levittown, New Jersey. This name change was made official in 1959 by a referendum of township residents. The name was changed back to Willingboro in 1963 to avoid confusion from Levittown Pennsylvania, which was only 12 miles away. After the name was changed back, Levitt refused to donate anymore schools to the fast growing community.
