Daylight Saving Time 2021

This year daylight saving time comes to a close on Sunday November 7, at 2:00 AM. Once we turn the clocks back, each day will become shorter until the winter solstice on December 21st.

Here are a few facts about Daylight Saving Time:

  1. Most countries near the equator don’t observe Daylight Saving Time.

  1. Some counties reference “Daylight Saving Time” as “Summer Time”.

  1. In the US, Hawaii and Arizona don’t observe Daylight Saving Time.

  1. Daylight Saving Time can be harmful to human health. The hour of sleep that we lose by springing ahead can increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, seasonal depression, and getting sick.

  1. A positive impact of DST is the decrease in crime. A study from 2015 discovered there was a drop in robberies near the start of DST.

  1. The United States first started observing Daylight Saving Time in 1918 to save electricity during the First World War. Although following wartime it was no longer observed.

  1. The time changes of Daylight Saving Time occur at 2:00 AM rather than midnight. This is because there were no trains leaving the stations in NYC at 2 AM in 1918. The goal was to interfere with railroad traffic as little as possible.

  1. In 1973, the US tried to have Daylight Saving Time all year-round. However it was repealed because there were a lot of school bus accidents in the morning.

  1. DST was put back in place in 1974 due to the energy crisis.
  2. Moving the clocks ahead also increases the risk of car accidents, because there are more sleep-deprived people behind the wheel.
